Frequently Asked Questions

If you are thinking about working with an accountant, or are considering a change from your current one, you probably have a few questions. Below we have answered the most common queries we receive from limited company directors, sole traders, and individuals.

What services does JJS Accountants provide?

We provide a full range of accounting and tax services for limited companies and sole traders, including year end accounts and submission to Companies House, corporation tax returns, self assessment tax returns, VAT returns, payroll and auto enrolment, bookkeeping, and CIS returns. We also offer a fully outsourced finance department service for limited companies, covering all of the above under one fixed monthly fee with a single point of contact.

Who do you work with?

We work primarily with directors of owner managed limited companies and self employed sole traders. Our clients range from newly formed companies through to well established businesses. We also help individuals with personal tax returns, including those with rental income, capital gains, or foreign income.

Where are you based?

JJS Accountants is based at 4 Queen Street, Bath, BA1 1HE. We work with clients in Bath, Bristol, Chippenham, Keynsham, Radstock, and the surrounding areas. We also work with clients across the UK on a fully remote basis using video calls, email, and cloud accounting software, so location does not need to be a barrier.

Are you Chartered Accountants?

Yes. JJS Accountants are members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). ICAEW Chartered Accountants are held to the highest professional and ethical standards in the accounting profession, and are required to maintain their knowledge through continuing professional development.

What is the difference between a Chartered Accountant and a bookkeeper?

A Chartered Accountant has completed professional examinations and training recognised by ICAEW, and is qualified to advise on complex areas such as corporation tax, capital gains tax, tax planning, and company compliance. A bookkeeper maintains day to day financial records. Both roles are important, and at JJS Accountants we provide both bookkeeping and chartered accountancy services under one roof.

What accounting software do you work with?

We work with all the main cloud accounting platforms, including Xero, FreeAgent, QuickBooks, Sage, and others. If you are already using a particular software package, we are happy to work with it. If you are not yet using any software, we can recommend the best option for your business and help you get set up.

Do you offer a free initial consultation?

Yes. We offer a free initial consultation where we can discuss your situation, answer your questions, and explain how we can help. This can be in person at our office in Bath, over a video call, or by telephone. There is no obligation.

How do I switch accountants?

Switching accountants is straightforward. We handle the entire process for you, including writing to your previous accountant to request a professional clearance and obtaining your records. You do not need to do anything other than let us know you would like to make the change.

What does the outsourced finance department service include?

Our outsourced finance department service is designed for limited company directors who want everything taken care of. It includes bookkeeping, payroll, VAT returns, monthly management accounts, year end accounts, corporation tax returns, all HMRC and Companies House filings, registered office facilities, and a monthly meeting to review your figures. All of this is provided for one fixed monthly fee with one dedicated point of contact.

How often will I hear from my accountant?

That depends on the service you choose. Clients on our outsourced finance department service have a monthly meeting with us as standard. For year end only clients, we are in regular contact during the accounts preparation process and available throughout the year whenever you have a question. We do not charge extra for picking up the phone.

What do I need to provide for my year end accounts?

We will need your bank statements, details of any income and expenses, and supporting documents such as invoices and receipts. We will guide you through exactly what is needed and provide a checklist so nothing is missed. Once we have everything, accounts can be prepared in as little as one week.

Do I need to come to your office?

No. While you are always welcome to visit us at our office in Bath, many of our clients work with us entirely online. We use video calls, email, and cloud accounting software to make the process smooth and convenient regardless of where you are based.

What areas do you cover?

We work with clients in Bath, Bristol, Chippenham, Keynsham, Radstock, and the surrounding villages and towns across the South West. We also work with clients across the UK on a remote basis.
